Builder’s Advocate: An Interview With Viewrail

Learn more about affordable, modern floating stairs, from design to manufacturing to installation.

By Justin Fink

In this exclusive video interview, Editorial Director Justin Fink sits down with Len Morris, owner and founder of Viewrail, to get answers to all of your questions about metal-frame floating-stair systems, including insights into their strength and engineering; how they compare to DIY, site-built, and custom floating stairs; what the important considerations are for specifying and installing Viewrail stair systems; and much more.

You can also get more insight about what it takes to incorporate a modular stair system into a home-building project in our podcast interview with Caleb Morris, Viewrail’s director of marketing:

I climbed out of a wooden playpen having vertical wooden rods, when I was 3 and broke my arm. Maybe I stood on a jack-in-the-box to get my centre of mass high enough. Who knows?
If you want your kid or grandkid to potentially climb those horizontal wires and fall to their death, you are a candidate for a Darwin Award. I will mourn the loss of an innocent life that looked to you to provide a safe environment, but you will get no sympathy from me for your anguish.

WHAT A NIGHTMARE ??? We ordered floating stairs and railings for our deck. Once the sale was made and down payment was received, everything started going downhill. After weeks of no response to calls and emails I had to track the owner down via LinkedIn to get them to respond. Drawings with incorrect measurements were sent multiple times. They would repeatedly call me for information when they should have been calling the contractor. They delivered the product weeks behind schedule. When it did arrive, posts for the railings were wrong for both the deck and the stairs. Handrails were the wrong size. They sent pieces we didn't need and didn't deliver parts we did need. They were rude to the guy trying to figure out what pieces were done correctly and which ones were wrong. We spent an additional $4500 in overages with the contractor with all the mistakes and temporary railings. This is the second time that I worked with them and both times it was the same experience. Save yourself the headaches and find another supplier.
