Home Network Security

Tips for protecting your personal information when using Wi-Fi-connected devices.

Issue 326 - October 2024

I recently was alerted to the lax security on network-enabled appliances and home technology equipment. The ability to manage lights, HVAC, and security remotely with web-enabled devices is obviously useful. Is there a way to know what devices are safe or tips for protecting your network from people trying to steal your personal information or otherwise hack your system?

— Bernadette Bessette; West Burke, Vt.

Home Technology Integrator Mike Bennett Replies

With so many network-connected devices on the market, I can only offer some standard advice: If you’ve never heard of the manufacturer or if you’ve only seen the product advertised on social media, I would stay away for many reasons. Similarly, if this is the first time the manufacturer has offered a “connected” device, I would also steer away or investigate further.

A water heater manufacturer, for example, isn’t going to be making its own Wi-Fi chipset or writing its own software, so try to figure out who the company has partnered with and buy products that use tech partners with solid reputations.

I would also look for connected devices that are compatible with known home technology platforms like Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, and Google Home, which require a reasonable level of security from partnered companies. If you don’t see that the device is compatible with any of these platforms, I would see that as a red flag.

Lastly, do not use the same password on your home network or wifi-enabled appliances that you use for banking or other important accounts. If you do find someone has taken control of or changed the password on a connected device, disconnect it. You can do this by either unplugging the ethernet connection or changing your Wi-Fi name and password. With either option, the device will no longer connect to the network until you go through the setup process again.
