Greek Revival-Inspired Renovation

This two-unit home renovation with added dormers preserves the past while creating a modern interior.

front of gray house with yellow doorThis once dilapidated multifamily residence underwent a complete overhaul focused on rooting it in the history of its urban neighborhood while also creating a modern home with new amenities. As a solution to choppy apartments lacking flow and a cramped attic space, the plan created one three-story unit and a separate garden-level apartment. Features such as a gabled roof, an elevated front door, wide trim, and pilasters lend a Greek Revival influence. Digging the foundation deeper increased ceiling height in the garden-level apartment, and adding three dormers transformed the top level into a comfortable living space. In the primary space, a now seamless flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas enhances natural light on the first floor, and a large kitchen island and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace are prime focal points for gatherings. The juxtaposition of traditional and modern elements is accomplished through sleek lines to achieve a contemporary, minimalistic look. Curves in the front entryway and a graceful, generously sized staircase create an inviting feeling, and a mixed palette of blues, whites, and grays is crisp yet serene.
