I got into painting when I was 17. A friend of the family who owned a painting business invited me over, I jumped on, and it was cool to be outside working in the summers as a kid. It wasn’t until about five years ago when I really started to fall in love with it and I saw the potential to push some cool creative stuff in the state.
My name’s James, I own McCausland Painting, and I’ve been in business five years. Today, we’re hanging out in central Vermont at the most beautiful old farmhouse. I was hired to restore it to the beauty it had and catch the newer stuff up to our level.
Focusing on Durability
To ensure we get a quality, long-lasting finish, we make sure the prep work is done right, such as soft wash, a little bit of deck brushing, and light spray just to clean and open the pores. For the cleaning prep work, we’ve chosen to use Benjamin Moore® products.
Today we’re coating the outside of this house in Benjamin Moore® Woodluxe® Natural Stain. I really like the way Woodluxe® goes on. It’s been reformulated, so it penetrates and isn’t as film-forming, and that helps it get in there. Penetrating stain is also easier for us to maintain because we’re not necessarily pulling that old film off — maybe next year, we’re just recoating it.
Painting is craftsmanship. I don’t necessarily believe we are just painters, though; I believe we’re finishers. And that’s what sets us apart — that we’re going in to transform somebody’s space, not just in color but in the total look and the feel of it. You walk into one of our rooms or to one of our exteriors and you notice that somebody took the time to care about it.
