International Builders' Show 2023

Smart and Agnostic Electrical Panel

As both a load center and an energy management system, the SPAN electrical panel allows residents to prioritize energy usage and loads.

By Josh Salinger Issue 316 - July 2023

One of the hot topics at this year’s International Builders’ Show was electrification. And with good reason—electrifying homes is a great way to get buildings ready to take advantage of an increasingly clean power grid. But managing the demands of electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges, and solar tie-ins can be a challenge, and panel replacements are going to become the norm as more homeowners take advantage of electrification incentives.

As both a load center and an energy management system, SPAN takes the electrical panel up a notch. Using standard breakers, it provides monitoring and load-balancing of up to 32 circuits. The energy management system allows you to prioritize energy based on use. This means you can install an EV charger with your existing 100-amp service, and SPAN can automatically turn that charger circuit off momentarily if the home’s maximum electrical capacity is reached (and turn it back on when demand decreases). A traditional panel and high-capacity car-charger installation would also require a 200-amp service upgrade. With a 100-amp SPAN panel, though, those high-demand circuits can be effectively managed without any inconvenience to the homeowner or a service upgrade.

SPAN can connect via WiFi, Ethernet, or cellular LTE. It is compatible with any grid-tied solar inverter, and with battery backup systems including SolarEdge Energy Hub with LG Chem RESU and SolarEdge Energy Bank, and Tesla Powerwall and Powerwall+.
