A Suite Bedroom with a Luxurious Bath

Stunning finish materials transform the suite bath into a spa-like experience.

By Jason Black

I’ve wanted to build a wet room and luxurious suite bathroom on one of our projects for a while, and this house was the perfect opportunity. In an earlier post I showed how we waterproofed the wet room with Schluter products. In this post, I want to show off the finish materials we chose. Gretchen picked out the tile for this room: For the wet room walls and bathroom floor she selected porcelain tiles that have a marble look—a cost-effective way to achieve the aesthetic we wanted without sacrificing durability. The floor of the wet room has a traditional visual pattern, but the actual layout of the tiles is more intricate and visually interesting than you might notice with a passing glance.

The wet room contains all the bathing arrangements anyone might need: his-and-her showers, a rain head, and a bathtub.

All of the bathroom fixtures are by DXV in unlaquered brass. The tub is a deep soaking tub.

The tiled floor in the bathroom is a combination of large-format porcelain tile and floor tile with a wood grain that establishes the lattice pattern.

The tile pattern on the wet room floor is a bit more distinct after grouting.

No rubbing elbows here. With plenty of room in the suite bath, there are separate shared en suite vanities flanking the window.

The bedroom suite is intended as a luxurious retreat from the rest of the house. With the double doors open, the light from the south-facing windows floods the bathroom. The bathroom is large enough for two to get ready for their day at the same time. The bedroom is on the smaller side, although it feels larger because it visually borrows from the private porch and the bathroom. Plus, the walk-in closet and dressing room create enough space that getting dressed doesn’t have to be a synchronized activity.

A wet room. Wonderful! I love all those walls that I get to squeegee after showering. Wow! A whole room complete with hidden areas behind the tub, to clean of soap scum, mineral deposits and mildew. I can't wait.
